ZCIEA Study Circle Manual Book 2 - Occupational Health and Safety, HIV & AIDS
Occupational health and safety includes the mental, physical and social wellbeing of workers in all occupations. Poor working conditions especially in the informal economy have the potential to affect a worker’s health and safety. Unhealthy or unsafe working conditions can be found anywhere, whether the workplace is indoors or outdoors. Poor working conditions can affect the environment workers live in. This means those workers, their families, other people in the community, and the physical environment around the workplace, can be exposed to hazards.
Informal economy workers in Zimbabwe are exposed to poor work environment, with little or no information and protection against hazards. However it is important to note that the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) is charged with the responsibility of safety and health at national, but workers in the informal economy are not regulated and are excluded from the services of NSSA.
